Each week once school starts, I have my students do word work with a word sort as a part of their daily routine. The students do it 5 days a week and on each day they do something different with their sort.
Monday: Cut and glue into journal- Check with the teacher
Tuesday: Cut and sort it like a puzzle.
Wednesday:Sort without headers-find the pattern in the words
Thursday: Writing Sort- students write out the sounds they hear from the word/picture in their journals
Friday: glue sort onto "turn in" page for a grade.
This is the Writing sort= where students sort their words/pictures like a puzzle and then write the words to show me that they understand the rule of the sort. Cos starts with "c" not a "k".
We use "Words Their Way" word sorts as a team.
I used this schedule with my summer school students and it worked well. I implemented it into my classroom and the students now know exactly what to do and when to do it.
I use the Words There Way for my sorts in the classroom, but I made this on to patch the pictures with the sound and then for my higher students, they can match the word with the picture. I plan on making more to match the picture with the word.
This year, I copied all my sorts on card stock to show my students and go over it with then before I send them off to do the work on their own.
I cut them all out and bunch them together so when I need to pull one out to show a group of students, they are ready for me. I made a poster to remind the students what they will be doing each day for their word sort (this does change a little when we do not have a full week of school because of holidays or snow days)
